Have you got a favorite instrument such as a guitar, but you hate how long it takes to play? It’s possible you’ve been using the wrong playing hand. The first and fourth fingers are often locked-in for left-handed guitar players, when in fact, the best way to play is with a “thumb-style” or “thumb-picking” grip.

What is BBM?

The Bbm or the B flat minor chord is one of the most common chords used in popular music today, and you’ve probably already heard it in a million songs. It’s a minor chord, so it goes from C to Eb. To make it, we need a B natural to start with to play that for the root of the chord. Then we can play the 3rd scale degree of the G major scale, which is D, to form the minor third.

Then, we can play the 5th scale degree of the G major scale, which is F, to form the perfect fifth. For beginner guitar students, the Bbm chord is one of the most elusive and difficult chords to master. Unfortunately, such is the difficulty of playing this chord; many people get completely discouraged and never try again.

The BBM is the ubiquitous “Blackbird” tuning, a chord progression that many artists have used over the years. Its most popular adoption, however, has been in the blues genre. The “Bbm” tuning uses the root, fifth, and octave of E minor and a minor third, which is essentially the same as E-A-G in standard tuning.

Playing the Bbm on Guitar

  1. Use your first finger to make a barre. Do this by placing the finger on the first fret.

  3. Place your third finger on the fourth string’s third fret.
  4. Then, put your fourth finger on the third string’s third fret.
  5. Lastly, start strumming. Do this by playing only the highest five strings of your guitar.

Playing bbm on guitar is really fun, but it is important to remember that there is a right and wrong way to play.
